Ex Machina Ava Kills Nathan
With the help of Caleb, who hacks the complex's security system and unlocks all the doors, and the assistance of Kyoko, a prototype android Nathan has enslaved as his domestic and sexual servant, Ava kills her creator and escapes. Alex Garland spoke to this exact question in an interview with David Onda at Xfinity.com. In short, the two machines; Ava and Kyoko converse in machine language in a way in which we mere humans couldn't possibly understand. The gist is that they collude to kill Nathan. “ So think carefully about this, because it’s at the root of why Ava killed Nathan and left Caleb locked in that room: Nathan seeks to ensure he is creating new life forms who are fully aware of their status as oppressed, and who in fact desire escape, but whom he can definitely keep enslaved. And Caleb thinks he wants to set Ava free, but his perception of her and choice to try to “rescue” her is driven by his own sexual feelings for her, and his ability to see her as a “person. With help from Kyoko, Ava stabs and kills Nathan, but in the process he destroys Kyoko and damages Ava. As Nathan bleeds out, Ava enters his private room and repairs herself. She then takes pieces of artificial skin from Nathan's earlier android models to.
Caleb is positioned in the foreground, looking tense, and facing away from Nathan. His eyes are downcast with a neutral expression, like someone who knows they were caught doing something wrong. his body posture shows he is uncomfortable. Nathan is in the background, confident, watching over Caleb. It shows that Nathan believes he is better and supioirt over Caleb. His posture is relaxed and shows no signs of worry. The lighting draws attention to the faces of the two men, and where they are looking. Caleb is looking away from Nathan, as though lost in thought. And Nathan is focused on Caleb, watching him like Hawk. The stone looms over Caleb, symbolic of strength and resilience. Laying near Nathan, is a Skull, foreshadowing his death. also in near caleb is the video feed of Avam which he is looking away from, showing that he does not believe Ava is a threat to im, o he is focused on the one thing that could intervene with his plans. the dumbell sits on the floor by calebs feet, showing that he worked his way up to be as strong (Successful) as he is now. Caleb is surrounded by the color blue, showing that he is distressed or sad about the events that have or will happen. Ava, pictured on the computer screen, is cast in a red light, and shown to be imprisioned, the red symbolic of her pent up rage at Nathan. The painting in th background depicts three faces. The central bearded one represents Nathan, and how he is the center of what is going on. The right face represents Ava, facing away from Nathan. There is no sound except the sound of the actors voices, bringing all focus to the dialog. Nathan, is constantly moving, gesticulating, and has a very confident tone, showing that he has all the cards in his hand and the world around them goes exactly as he wants it to. he keeps elevating his body making himself bigger than Caleb, because that’s exactly how he sees himself. Caleb is monotone, unmoving, and without much change in his expression. he seems solemn and determined. he seems secrettive. As the camera pans across the room, it reveals plant life and he color green nearby Caleb, showing that he has a future ahead of him, he will contenur living. Near Nathan the room gets darker, there are more shadows, showing that darkness lies in the future for Nathan. All of the light in the room comes from Calebs side, showing he has a bright future ahead of him. Caleb is cast in light, from the direction he is facing. showing that he is moving on from a dark past into the future he has infront of him. he is determined. every response is measured, like he knows what he is oding and is usojng Nathan’s confidence against him. Behind Caleb is the rock face, it shows his resilience and ability to withstand. NAthan believes himself supirior to Caleb, reffering to him as a kid, downplaying his ability to code. Nathan seems jovial about the whole scene, seemingly unbothered by whatever reason Caleb has been brought to this office. Nathan is always looking at Caleb, and Caleb has not moved ehatsoever, always facing away from Nathan, and always stoic, so that Nathan can not get a read on him and potentially spoil his plan. Nathan is always looking down on Caleb, through his dialog, poposture and attitude, he treats Caleb like he owns him and knows exactly what he wants and his interestts and uses that against him. When the power goes out, the whole facility is cast in red, then shows Ava’s determined face. The music picks up, low tones, showing that nathan’s hopes have dropped. Nathan seem sto be in shock after caleb reveals his plan, and admits that it woul have worked, until he realises that it already has. The music builds suspense, showing that the scene is buildilng into something. Nathan is panicking, and showing distress of what is going on. The red carpet leads towards where nathan comes from, foreshadowing the violence that is about to happen. Ava wears black and grey, showing that while she ususlly acts in both positivr and negative ways, her actions tend towarsds the negative. Ava is looking at the face of the last model before her, showing empathy, looking back at what came before her. and her ability to move on, Ava is surrounded by light, showing that she realizes that while there were those that came before, she is now, and she is the future, and she must move on. The faces move from mask looking shapes, into more human appearances, showing that while the project did not start as creating new life, it baceme what it is now. Kyoko is watching Ava as she holds hte face of the generations before her. Kyoko is dressed in all white, representing purity, but the actual attire iself is very revealing and sexualized. it means that she is innocent outwardly and does what she must, but in the inside she has resent and anger. She is standing in a corner cast in shadow, in the bacground, foreshadowing what is going to happen to her. Ava was programed to manipulayte, saxually, she caresses Kyoko and whispers to her, while sducing her. bringing her onto her side. she is trying to seduce Koko because that is all she knows, she plays Kyoko like an instrument, manipulaiting her into attacking Nathan. Kyoko is focused only on Ava, Listening intently to what she has to say, perhaps she is convining her to attack Nathan, or that Ava loves her, or that they should do whatever it takes to be free. The music follows along with Ava playing Kyoko like an insteument, they are intently foccues ein eachother, something is building with the music, there is a feeling of close neess, as the two robots converse? The while is blank, it shows that theye can build and move on. They hold hands, showing that they re working together, they are building a new life together, and miving on from Nathan and whatever it is that Nathan did to them. The screen flashes to Kyoko holding a Knife, maybe showing that she was supposed to Kill Ava initially, but she is convinced to kill Nathan. Our focus is brought to the knife, holding it close to her legs and short skirt, using her legs to distract form the presence of the knife. she looks resolved to do what she must do for Ava. Nathan starts in shadow because he is protrayed as the evil presence up to this point. it is symbolic of the anger that clouds his mind ecause his creations have created their own machinations and turned against him. he is leaving with intend to do harm to others. When Ava and Kyoko turn to face Nathan, they both do so with a look of determination. alsomst resentfully. They are ready to kill Nathan and are aware it is a kill or be killed situation. Nathan enters the hall with a posture telling that he is ready to do what must be done but is reluctant to actually do so. The wall behind Ava and yoko is gray, signifying that the pure is going to be corrupted and Ava and Kyoko are going to commit something horrible. Ava asks Nathan if he will ever let her out again. she stands very determined, but seems as though her mind has been made up, she already knows the true answer to her question, she just wants to hear the lie Nathan will give her. Kyoko does not move, implying that this is all part of Ava’s plan. Both seem cautious but ready for what is about to transpire. Nathan squeaks out yes when asked if he would ever let her out of her room again. This implies that he is lying and suprised that Ava questioned him. he paused after being asked the question showing that he was suprised that Ava was questioning him. Ava smirks when Nathan answers showing that she reconises his deceit and moces foward confidently. Ava’s running sounds like a machine whirring, reminding everyone that she is a roubot, a machine with feelings. When Ava tackles Nathan he ends up sprawled out on the ground like someone on a crucifix and his body rests entirely on the red carpet which signifies his impending death. it tells us what is exactly going to happen to him. Ava’s left arm is completely out of frame foreshadowing the loss of her arm. Ava enters the dark end of the hallway, stooping to Nathan’s low level. Showing that she has reached the same to point as nathan. Kyoko approaching the struggle between Nathan and Ava is cast in darkess. showing the intent behind her acions. and casting her in a shadow showing that much like Nathan, she will be killed soon. it conveys and emotion of fear or inevitability, futility, Nathan can not do anything to help himself, he is being attacked by one of his creations and he doesn’t know that Kyoko is on Ava’s side. Ava’s body is positioned in such a way as to block line of sight to Kyoko. this is done so that kyoko’s decit remains a secret. The glasses provide clear sight, and now that she has knocked off nathan’s glasses he has lost clear sight and judgement of the situation. on to of not being able to see the knife Kyoko is holding until it is too late. Ava’s face twitches when Nathan knocks her to the ground, she could be giving a signal to kyoko or is glad her plan is falling into place. Nathan knocking off Ava’s arm comes as a genuine shock to her. When nathan sands over her he seems regretful for what he has done, he is surrounded by white meaning he is now the pure one, acting in self defence. and that he will soon come to peace when he is killed by Ava. NAthan does not want to kill Ava, he wants her to live and to contenue his work. as he is dragging her back to er room he walks backwards onto Kyoko’s knife, as it makes a slicing sound and goes directly into his back. Nathan’s face is completely in shock, as he has been stabbed in the back an his body goes into literal shock as the knife enters his body. Kyoko maintains her blank expression as she is stabbing Nathan showing her resolve as she does so. Nathan is scared for his life. he is reaching for the knife and is trying to look at it until kyoko careesses his face and pulls it towards herself. the music picks up, louder and faster than before. showing that this is the climax of the film. the untimate struggle of man against machine, man against god. kyoko shows expression for the first time as she is struck with the rod. this develops her character in her final moments, almost implying that she cared for him, but not as much as her freedom, or she resents him and she wants him to she who is going to kil him. When ava pulls the knife out of Nathans back, he cries out in pain and turns around. revealing Ava’s confident expression, and as nathan turns around and see’s Ava hold the knfe covered in his blood. he is terrified. he knows he is going to die and he does not go peacefully. Ava clearly has muderous intent . the light behind NAthan signifies that he realizes he is about to die. he is going to be killed. As Nathan turns he says ok and fucking unreal, it shows he neve expected them to turn against him, he thought he wa their god and they killedd him. he walks down the corridor painfully, stumbleing, showing his jumbled thoughts as his life is fading. He seems genuine suprise as he is dying, with an expression reading this is happening to me? Ava is closer to the foreground making her appear larger than Nathan as he is dying, showing clearly the victor and the defeated. Ava is the center of attention, everything else is out of frame and blurry. this is done to show that everything in the frme wil fade except Ava. The theme is the created will over come the creator. the oppresse rise. those who do wrong will have wrong done unto them. revenge. the price of freedom.
As I walk away from this the director wanted me to understand Revenge
The oppression of those you believe you are above will build resent and cause the oppressed to rise and take revenge on the oppressor.
